The Meowkies, known in Japan as Mewkies (ミューキーズ Myūkīzu), are a group of cats in the Mappy series. They are the children of Goro [1], and help guard the stolen goods from Mappy.
Characteristics[]
There are three Meowkies - Mewta, Mewchi, and Mew-Mew. In most games they appear identical, but are distinguishable from each other in Mappy Kids (and promotional artwork).
- Mewta (ミュータ Myūta) - Wears a neckerchief, lacking the blue fur the other two have. She (?) has good reflexes, and can act quickly.
- Mewchi (ミューキチ Myūkichi) - Has very angry eyebrows. He is strong and good at sumo-wrestling.
- Mew-Mew (ミューミュー Myūmyū) - Has large, blue eyes. Her great vision allows her to spot things easily.
In Namco High, there is a generically-named character named "Meowkie". This Meowky seems to share characteristics with both Mewta and Mew-Mew, and it is unclear which one she is intended to be (if either).
Technically speaking, more than three Meowkies appear in later levels of the games and the show - but they were never established as other characters.
Trivia[]
- In the Summer 1983 issue of NG Magazine, there is an early screenshot of the Mappy title screen - listing the Meowkies under the name "Nyanta". On the next page, however, the Japanese "Mewkies" name is used instead, meaning the "Nyanta" name was likely dropped early on.
- In the original arcade version (in some versions) of Mappy, one of the Meowkies tend to aggressively follow Mappy's movements if he prepares to jump on a trampoline.
- Oddly, the Meowkies had no major appearances in the animated series, Mappy: The Beat. A few young cats can briefly be seen in some episodes, which may be intended to be the Meowkies; however, they have Goro's red color scheme instead of the traditional pink.
